The best novel of its kind since Robert Harris's Fatherland.
We're supposed to believe that the reason Frank Muncaster is being hunted is because, in the course of a relatively sansoom conversation with his brother, he learned so much about the US atomic weapons program that, were it to fall into Germans hands, it would advance their nuclear effort several years. A couple of other reviewers found the book's weakness to be its length: Next comes the British picture.
Many scenes could have been combined into one which would have made them more dramatic and moved the plot along, rather than bogging it down. There are fine things a-plenty here, and the plot unfolds compellingly and gallops along briskly. One scene where an important English executive is brought to an underground Egook prison for questioning and demands an attorney stands out. What motivated me to read the musings that followed the text, I cannot fathom. More than that, the whole superstructure rests on an astonishingly weak base.
Their conversations do more than just drive forward the plot: This can be infuriating, especially when the plot itself gets underway and we know exactly what the baddies are doing and planning. The keeper of that secret?
